A remodel of an existing restaurant located on Frank Lloyd Wright and Pima Roads, Zen Culinary’s entrance faces a loud highway. Because visibility from the highway is minimal, our first direction was to reorient the patio and entry so that it would face the plaza and slower traffic driving through. The original interior was dark with divided spaces and no connection to the exterior. Therefore, we sought to blur the lines of interior and exterior in a number of ways. First, by moving the patio to the end of the building and then adding full pocketing glass doors between for more natural light. We also added plants and water features to the interior. The custom-designed interior pendant lighting, feature walls and bamboo-formed concrete create an open environment that speaks to the restaurant’s Asian fusion concept.
