With unparalleled views of the canyon below to the north and west, the Carefree Modern sits nestled onto the sloped hillside terrain atop a ridge. Wrapping around the ridge in an L shape, the terraced two-story structure is essentially comprised of two planes or “wings” that meet in a vaulted corner to create the main living space of the home. Full height, glass, operable windows flank the walls of the living space, giving the effect that the planes are floating. While simultaneously sheltering the patio areas outside, the steel overhangs on the fascias along the roofilne create sun protection to the patios below. The main floor sits on the southern leg of the ‘L’ and contains the main living areas, garage, and guest quarters on the second story above. Within the main living space lies the living and dining area, wine room, bar, and features a bulthaup designed kitchen. The other wing of the home contains the master bedroom suite on the lower level, with the family bedrooms placed above. Given the unparalleled views of the canyon below, the main entrance was designed to sit on a mid-level mezzanine, allowing guests to walk in five feet above the main living space and look out the full height glass windows with unobstructed views of the canyon. Maximizing on these views, the north and west patios connect outdoors, giving different sun protection and distinctive spaces within, including an outdoor bar mirrored in polished brass, an outdoor cooking area, and also contains space for lounging. In the corner of the patio where the two planes meet sits the negative edge pool, its overflow becoming part of the landscaped terracing below. With careful consideration to the landscape, the entire structure is lightly placed into the mountainside, tucked into the cornice atop the ridge, mindfully designed around the existing elements.
