Carefree Hacienda

Comprised of both a single-story main house and a separate guest house, the Carefree Hacienda residence uses individual courtyards to maximize outdoor space amongst the foothill landscape. Tipping the roofs to the north allowed windows to be added along the roofline, bringing in natural light from the east and west to the centralized living space, allowing light to flood in from all four directions. In the main house, the living space is flanked by bedrooms on both sides, while the guest house is flanked on one side with bedrooms, the other with garages. The guest house contains compact elements of the main home, while functioning on its own as a separate living space with both a sequestered main entrance and open porch in the back. In the main house, the living room opens to the hacienda in the north, the patio and pool accessed through the kitchen and dining area to the south. With the intention of disrupting the existing terrain as little as possible, the structures are terraced carefully into the sloped foothill landscape the site provides.
